Looking back on my media use for Saturday I was surprised
how little media I had listed. I did spend the entire morning driving around
helping with frozen vehicles and transportation issues. This accounted for 4
hours listening to the car radio. The morning also included an hour spent writing
an extemporaneous writing sample for my Internship Application. I spent
Saturday afternoon at home with my parents working on homework and doing some baking.
While doing homework I tend to be on an off Facebook with such frequency it
makes it hard to record. While at my parents’
house, print media is abundant. I can read the newspaper for the first time all
week or flip through a magazine. I spend
more time interacting with family and pets while I am at home and less time on
the computer making my media connections more traditional. I did watched Downton Abbey on Netflix with my family before falling asleep.
Tuesday was more of a normal media day for me. I got online
first thing and checked Facebook, email, and Skype. I have friends in Scotland
and first thing in the morning is normally the best time to try to talk. I caught
up with Glee and sent some texts before going to Fred Myers. Any time spent in
the car is accompanied by the radio. At 2:00pm, I went to my only class of the
day where I opened my laptop and had Facebook, Email, and Blackboard running in
the background between taking notes. After class, I drove to my parents’ house listening
to the radio in the car. When I got home NPR was playing on the radio so I
listened to a show about Mitt Romney for about an hour. I got on my computer to
work on the internship application, naturally Facebook and Email was open. The
rest of the night continued in this fashion surfing the web and text messaging
while getting some homework done.
I had a hard time keeping up with the media diary especially
marking down Facebook use and texting. It’s difficult to remember to record
texting when you spend just a minute doing the activity and it’s mostly an all
day event. Looking at my log, I could determine that I use more media during
the week. This is because I am on my computer doing homework or trying to
distract myself from homework. Using media is mostly a multitasking activity
for me. I don’t sit down and just listen to the radio it’s on in the background.
I don’t interact much with printed media
and stay mostly to digital but I do listen to a lot of radio.
It's surprising how those tiny little things like texting and Facebook-checking add up!! I think that modern day media use has definitely made us all avid multi-taskers!! =)
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your blog. I love the fact that your weekend wasn't overwhelmingly spent focused only on media but you are able to spend quality time with you're family. Something we have in common is that you seem to have music/radio on a lot. That was something I noticed as well in myself. I also found that I did more on my laptop/pc during the week, mainly because I would be doing homework and various other things during homework "breaks".
ReplyDeleteI did the same thing!! When I use my phone I am constantly quickly checking Facebook for updates or my email when the notice goes off. I as well found it quite difficult to write down each amount of time used so I basically just did a time span of the hours I checked it most =P but multi-tasking is quite great isn't it?!
ReplyDeleteAshley
Thank you for the ride to the writing sample day.
ReplyDeleteYou listen to NPR?! On the radio?!
I prefer digital. Although I need a new transmitter for my iPhone in my car, which is now functioning well. ^_^
